Reviewed by AJ Robles Owner & Licensed Master Plumber · LIC# RMP 46529 Updated July 23, 2026 There's a point where patching one leak after another stops making sense — where the smart money is on replacing the pipe instead of chasing failures around the house. A repipe sounds drastic, but for the right home it ends the cycle for good. Here's how to tell when it's time.
The signs it's time to repipe
- Leaks that keep coming back — in different spots, not just one stubborn fitting.
- Low water pressure throughout the house, especially if it's gotten worse over the years.
- Rusty or discolored water, particularly first thing in the morning.
- Visible corrosion or staining on exposed pipes.
- Recurring slab leaks in an older system.
It's often about the pipe material
Age and material matter as much as symptoms. Two materials are especially common repipe candidates in older Houston-area homes:
- Polybutylene — gray plastic supply pipe used in many homes built roughly 1978–1995. It can become brittle and fail without warning.
- Galvanized steel — old zinc-coated pipe that corrodes and clogs from the inside out, cutting pressure and rusting your water.
Not sure what you have? We can identify your piping during a visit and tell you honestly whether a repipe is warranted yet — or whether a targeted repair will do for now.
What a repipe fixes
A whole-home repipe replaces the failing supply lines so you stop paying for leak after leak. Done right, it restores even water pressure, clears up rusty water, and gives you years of worry-free plumbing. It also lets you choose a modern material suited to our water — which brings up the big decision.
PEX or copper?
Both are excellent. PEX is flexible, corrosion-resistant, and usually more affordable; copper is rigid, long-proven, and preferred by some homeowners. Our PEX vs. copper guide lays out the trade-offs so you can choose with confidence.
What to expect
A repipe is less disruptive than most people fear — we plan the routing to minimize wall openings, protect your home, and keep water restored as much as possible. We pull the permit and handle the inspection, and we'll walk you through the scope before any work starts. Ready to find out where you stand? Talk to our repiping team for an honest assessment.
